Adapting to Change - A new Beginning

May 02, 2017

I often heard the saying, “the only constant is change”. So elegant, so powerful… yet not many embrace the true meaning of it and adapt to change as quickly and as smoothly. Many even contemplate on the traditional ways of doing things and resist change, by saying that change is optional and too risky. They assumed that whatever there is now, is the equilibrium, and any shocks to the equilibrium will only be temporary.
How false was their assumption, looking at how things are done nowadays?
Through globalization for example, who would have thought you can have one product that was manufactured in one country, assembled in another country, marketed in a different country? The adoption of emails and internet messaging, on the other hand, has replaced the traditional mail (some even call them snail-mail nowadays, due to the long time taken to deliver a letter) that you can hardly see children collecting stamps as hobby. Instead, they probably spend most of their free time on the web, surfing the social media etc. Even the library, has been transformed from a large building with hundreds of shelves with books, are now more synonymous with a comfortable and quiet area with good internet access. There is less possibility of you bumping into a potential date at the bookshelf nowadays, instead people are now eager to swipe their tinder accounts.
The smartphones -now the single most important device of a person’s life- together with sophisticated and smart mobile applications has single-handedly transform the world. You can watch movies, check your body temperature and blood pressure, look for directions on the map, check your account balances and even make your daily shopping at online mall.  On top of that, the recent breakthrough of Internet of Things (IoT) that connect devices to the internet and turn them into super-tools has given birth to the rise of the so called ‘Uber-Economy’. This new economic area involves the digitally enabled works that let people work on their own convenience and gets paid according to the output that they deliver. This includes the uber itself, airbnb, freelance jobs on the net such data entry / coding / programming etc, that lets people work on their own hours. This ‘Uber-Economy’ is slowly replacing the traditional 9-5 work, and provides a super cheap alternatives for end users.
The above are just a very small sample of the kind of changes that we have seen in front of our very own eyes. You can only imagine what kind of changes that will happen in the next few years. Believe it or not, everyone needs to adapt, or risk being irrelevant to the future economy and society.
How true..

This blog was intended for the author to share his point of views, as a site for him to articulate his ideas and develop his own thinking on certain issues. But of course, it will always revolve around change, mostly on how the economy is changing due to the advancement of technologies and the societal evolution. Needless to say, the economy has evolved several times from the early years of barter system to the creation of monetary system and so on… but it has yet to reach its final evolution form has it?
Lets throw ideas, build your thoughts and maturely discuss your point of view. We are at the point where ‘freedom of speech’ is no longer an aspiration, but rather a necessity for growth and advancement.. Be it right or wrong, let it out and let’s discuss.. There’s no shame of giving ideas and thoughts, so long it has nothing to do with demoting others.
One of the main reason that I started writing was also to help me shape my train of thoughts.. You have to try it! Writing lets you step back and think through all the things that are jumping around in your mind.. It lets you relate, understand and finally shape your thinking to be shared with others.. And that is exactly why everyone should start writing!
